Each year thousands of women turn to the Center For Breast Health at Northside Medical Center for high-quality breast health services that are private, convenient and affordable. The Center For Breast Health, a service of Forum Health’s Cancer CareCenter, was designed to provide women in the community with an integrated way to care for breast disease and breast cancer.

Our staff is attuned to the special concerns of women. Each year 10,000 to 12,000 procedures are performed at the center.  The Center For Breast Health is accredited by the FDA and the American College of Radiology, assuring that patients receive a high standard of care and quality.

Services include:

  • Screening and diagnostic mammograms
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Stereotactic biopsy
  • Breast ultrasound for cyst aspiration
  • Needle localization
  • Ductograms
  • Consultations, second opinions and additional medical, surgical and diagnostic services are also available when needed.
  • Osteoporosis Testing (DEXA Scan)
  • Access to MRI of the breast and MRI biopsy

Related Services

The Center also helps women without resources to obtain mammography and other breast health services.  An affiliation with the American Cancer Society through the Race For The Cure helps provide mammography services and biopsies for patients without available funds.

Mobile mammography reaches women in the community who often are without access to such services.  By working with area businesses to provide on-site services, mobile mammography offers convenience to working women.

DEXA bone density testing for osteoporosis is also available at The Center For Breast Health. Osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to become thin and break easily, is a special concern since women are at higher risk and incidence for the disease. The test is safe, painless and easy. You will need a physician’s referral to schedule the test, which can help diagnose bone loss early and lead to successful treatment.

The Staff

The staff, also women, is sensitive to and focus on the problems women have concerning breast cancer and disease.   The Center For Breast Health’s team of professionals includes:

  • Two board-certified radiologists who specialize in breast care.  Their focus is on mammography and the detection and diagnosis of breast disease and cancer.
  • Registered mammographers who are specialized radiology technician that must meet continuing education requirements and perform a procedure volume set by the Mammography Quality Standards Act.
  • A registered nurse, who serves as a liaison between patient and physician.  She also offers support and provides education about different diseases and the various treatment and surgical options available.

Also, each month a team of physicians, nurses, radiation therapists and medical oncologists meet to discuss cases and set-up a continuum of care.

Your Mammogram

What is the difference between a Screening and a Diagnostic Mammogram?

A screening mammogram is a routine radiologic examination of both breasts performed on a woman who does not have symptoms of breast disease, is not at high risk for breast cancer, and has no present or recurrent breast problem such as a past history of breast cancer. Past breast problems do not necessarily mean that you may not have a screening mammogram. Some problems, after they are resolved, no longer require anything other than a routine screening mammogram.

If you have any questions regarding a screening mammogram, please discuss this with our Center for Breast Health at 330-884-2200.

Implants require extra views called "pinch views" where the radiology technician gently pushes the implants out of the way to visualize the breast tissue. Mammograms with implants may be screening if there are no under lying breast problems or past history of breast cancer. Your prior mammogram films will be reviewed with your current exam, not while you are here. You will receive your results in letter form approximately 4-7 days after your exam.

A Diagnostic mammogram is technically the same procedure as a Screening mammogram. The main difference is that the procedure focuses on the sign or symptoms of breast disease, including pain, nipple discharge, masses or lumps, a personal history of breast cancer, or high risk under the age of 35. Additional views of an area may be done at the time of your exam. An ultrasound, if indicated will be ordered by our radiologist. A biopsy may be requested and many times may be done at the same visit for any findings. The radiologist will let you know the findings at the time of your diagnostic exam. If a biopsy is done the results will be available to your physician within 24-48 hrs.

Important things to know when having a mammogram at The Center for Breast Health

A Screening mammogram does not require a prescription. One year must have gone by before you come for your screening. Although we do not require a prescription for a screening exam, you must have a physician to receive the exam results. An appointment time is not necessary. You may walk-in 7:30-4:00, Monday-Friday.

A Diagnostic mammogram requires a prescription from your physician. You must schedule an appointment for a diagnostic mammogram.

Our radiologists are board certified through the American College of Radiology. Our facility is accredited through the American College of Radiology and certified through the FDA’s Mammography Quality Standards Act.

Who should visit the Center for Breast Health

Breast cancer is treatable when diagnosed at the earliest stages.

The Center for Breast Health has excellent diagnostic capability, compassionate care, and superior treatment options available through our medical and surgical support services.

Anyone with a breast problem, lump, past breast cancer diagnosis should visit. It is also very important that women who have no problems visit for a screening mammogram. A baseline mammogram between the ages 35-40 is recommended while women 40 years and older should schedule an annual exam.

Access to clinical trials.

Researchers are constantly looking for new ways to diagnose, treat, and ultimately, cure cancer. When laboratory research shows that a new prevention or treatment method has promise, cancer patients may receive this treatment in studies called "clinical trials." Clinical trials answer scientific questions, such as: Is a new approach to treatment safe and effective or is an improvement over standard care. Availability of clinical trials, through our research department offer access to national databases of current trials. Trials include breast cancer treatment trials along with prevention trials for healthy women. Our clinical trials data base include world renown groups such as NSABP(National Surgical Breast and Bowel Project),SWOG(Southwest Oncology Group), RTOG(Radiation TherapyOncology Group), and ACRIN(American College of Radiology Imaging Network). Clinical Trial information regarding breast studies can be obtained by contacting Forum Health’s Center for Breast Health.

Monthly Breast Conference.
