Brain Injury Insight Group
This support group is geared to teenagers who have experienced a brain injury, as well as their family members. Discussion focuses on their particular issues. Living with Stroke
"Living with Stroke" is an educational program offered for stroke survivors, families and care givers. This is a 4 session program presented over a two-week period. Topics include causes and types of stroke, risk factors and prevention, behavior changes, diet & nutrition, medications, daily living activities, care tips, emotional issues and more. The Adapted Sports Program at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital is designed for individuals with a permanent or temporary disability. Its purpose is to introduce individuals to a variety of activities that will benefit them both therapeutically and recreationally. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists coordinate and run the program. Programs include air rifle/pistol, archery, basketball, biking, bocce, bowling, golf, miniature golf, tennis and PEP (Physical Exercise Program). The on campus HRH Sports Complex, located behind the hospital, is a specially designed facility that includes a golf putting and chipping area, five full-swing golf stations for driving, 9-hole miniature golf course, bocce court, archery range, pavilion and a multipurpose activity court for basketball and tennis.

Driver’s Training
The Driver’s Training program helps people assists the physically challenged and/ or inexperienced driver in obtaining the necessary skills needed to safely operate a motor vehicle The program teaches alternative ways to drive, including the use of hand controls and other adaptive equipment. Each person receives an evaluation of vision, extremity strength, coordination, cognitive status, reaction time and parking lot driving.
A written pre-drivers assessment and an on road evaluation are performed to determine the individual’s need for driver’s training. In training, the physical, functional, behavioral and cognitive domains of the individual are addressed in classroom and on-road driving instruction.
To participate, the individual must meet the following minimal criteria:
- Complete a comprehensive visual screen
- Be referred by a physician or a BVR counselor or physician
- Complete a comprehensive driving evaluation
- Present a driving permit or current drivers license
- Be free of any country or state mandated driving restrictions
- Demonstrate sufficient strength and range of motion needed to maneuver steering wheel and hand controls
- Present proof of liability insurance
Upon completion of the program, the participant will receive a certificate of completion, and copies of this will be sent to the referring counselor or physician.

Hearing Screenings
Hearing screenings for all ages are available through Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital’s Audiology Department. Infant hearing tests are available, along with pediatric hearing tests, and hearing tests for all adults. All screenings are provided by a licensed audiologist. Insurance may cover all or part of the cost of a hearing exam, but clients are advised to check with their insurance company beforehand. The cost of a hearing exam is covered by Medicare. Hearing Aid Services
The Audiology Department at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital dispenses several types of quality hearing aids. These include the latest in programmable and digital hearing aids, along with hearing aids that are inserted completely in the ear canal or are positioned behind the ear. The department also sells a variety of hearing aid batteries. Insurance may cover all or part of the cost of a hearing aid, but clients are advised to check with their insurance company beforehand. Laboratory Services
Hillside also provides state-of-the-art laboratory services accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Services are available for both inpatients and outpatients. Outpatient laboratory hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. For an appointment or more information, call 330 841-3826. A physician's order is required for all laboratory tests and may be faxed directly to the laboratory at 330 841-3531. Clients are advised to check with their insurance companies prior to testing.
PEP (Physical Exercise Program)
PEP is a physical exercise program designed to address the many fitness challenge sof former rehabilitation patients and those with physical disabilities. Regular exercise is essential to physical and mental well being. It can help a person maintain flexibility, increase day-to-day strength, and lessen the chance of injury. A knowledgeable staff at HRH will customize an exercise program to meet the abilities and needs of the individual. Some types of physical challenges accommodated include:

Participants can exercise 2 times per week. Equipment is available that can be adapted to the individual's needs including a universal workout system, treadmills (standard and wheelchair accessible), exercise bicycles, free weights, parallel bars, a total gym, balance equipment, and more! TB Clinic
Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital offers a Tuberculosis Clinic. The TB Clinic is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The clinic gives TB tests free of charge to Trumbull County residents. Walk-in clients are welcome during those hours. If a TB test is positive, the client will be referred to a physician. For more information, call the TB Clinic at 330-841-3761.
Transportation Program
The Transportation Program provides service for patients in the surrounding area who have no other means of transportation to outpatient therapy at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital. The services can accommodate ambulatory and wheelchair patients. Transportation is scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Through-the-door services are provided and available Monday through Friday for those living within a 15-mile radius of Hillside. The patient must be ready at the scheduled pick-up time. Drivers are not permitted to enter the patient’s home. There is a nominal round-trip fee of $4.
Two full-time, two part-time and two per diem chauffeurs staff the department and are overseen by the Clinical Supervisor of Recreation/Adapted Sports and Transportation. For more information, call 330-841-3655.
