Discovery House The Center for Behavioral Medicine Tod Children’s Hospital 500 Gypsy Lane Youngstown, OH 44501 330-884-3184
Discovery House offers partial hospitalization/day treatment and intensive outpatient therapy to children and teenagers with emotional and behavioral problems, as well as adolescents with substance abuse issues. Some of the emotional and behavioral problems addressed include depression, school avoidance, eating disorders, attention deficit with hyperactivity disorder, family conflict and chemical dependency.
Discovery House is open to students ages 4-18 who need more intense treatment than traditional weekly therapy, but who do not need inpatient hospitalization. The partial hospitalization/day-treatment program operates from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., weekdays, and is also available during the evening and weekends. The intensive outpatient program is available seven days a week for four hours or less per day.
All programs at Discovery House offer individual, group and family counseling and recreational therapy. Educational therapy is also offered so that credit is not lost at the student’s home school.
Differing Needs
Because children and adolescents’ needs vary, Discovery House has two separate programs focused on specific age groups. The children’s program is for ages 4-12 and the adolescent program is for teens, ages 13-18. The program with the chemical dependency focus is for adolescents, and the hours are extended into the evening to include the mental health, as well as the chemical dependency program.
Our staff is a multidisciplinary team with child and adolescent psychiatrists, individual/family counselors, psychiatric nurses, teachers, and mental health associates. Our highly-qualified educators on staff work closely with the home schools to address academic problems and to ensure a smooth transition back to school.
Discovery House Benefits
The program matches the intensity of mental health and/or recovery services to the needs of the children/teens and families. Because the program is not inpatient, it allows the students and families to practice each evening what they are learning at Discovery House during the day. Yet it offers more intensive therapy than outpatient counseling. The program can also serve as a transition following an inpatient psychiatric stay.
Referrals
Anyone can make a referral to Discovery House by calling (330) 884-3184. A free assessment can be scheduled. Great care is given to matching the child/teen and family to the program that best suits their needs.
