At Forum Health, we understand that most cancer patients want to receive treatment in the least restrictive environment, preferably on an outpatient basis. We know how important it is to have the support of family and friends at home. While our goal is always to keep you out of the hospital, during your treatment course, there may be times when hospitalization is needed. Admission to an Oncology Inpatient Unit at Forum Health will be arranged for you. Forum Health's Cancer CareCenters are the region's leading providers of high quality inpatient care for patients in the Mahoning Valley. Adult inpatient cancer care is provided at both of Forum Health's major hospitals, Northside Medical Center in Youngstown and Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren.
Our Team
The strength of our inpatient services begins with the expertise of our oncology (cancer) healthcare team. The units have an active staff of doctors board certified in treating cancer and blood disorders (hematology/oncology) who direct your care.
Following a plan of care designed specifically for you, the unit's specially educated staff, directed by the clinical nurse manager, delivers high quality care in a compassionate and family-focused setting. Members of the staff include the assistant clinical nurse manager, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants and a ward clerk.
During your hospital stay, you will also see members of the Cancer CareCenter interdisciplinary team, which include a patient/community educator, social worker, dietitian, chaplain, research/transplant coordinators and clinical nurse specialist/patient care coordinator. When necessary, you may need to visit other departments at the hospital for special tests or procedures and will meet other healthcare professionals.
Your Plan of Care
Our team provides care, support and education to meet your needs. The treatment plan that you and your doctor discussed will be reviewed and information and education about your disease, treatment and care will be shared with you throughout your hospitalization. We encourage you to ask questions and to let us know how you are feeling, so that we can provide the best possible care for you.
Family members are encouraged to visit at any time and share in providing care and preparing for discharge. One of the oncology doctors makes "rounds" every morning. When in the hospital, you will not be seen by the same doctor each day. Although a specific doctor is primarily involved with your care, it is to your advantage to be seen by all the doctors in the department so that they may also be familiar with your care. We encourage your family to be present during "rounds" to speak with the doctor.
We will do our very best to make your hospital stay as comfortable as possible.
Our Inpatient Hospice Unit at Trumbull Memorial Hospital
We understand the special needs that patients and families have as the end of life nears and are proud to provide a beautiful inpatient hospice unit for such occasions. A skilled staff of doctors, nurses and other health care partners trained in palliative and end-of-life care are available to care for terminally ill patients and their families when hospital admissions become necessary. This includes a physician who is board certified in palliative medicine, and nurses certified in hospice and palliative care.
In an effort to hold true to the hospice philosophy, family involvement is welcomed during a loved one's hospital stay. Our rooms provide ample space for family members to stay together, as well as providing a kitchen and meditation room for those times when it is necessary to have time alone. Sometimes it is necessary for families to use this time to rest themselves while their loved one is being cared for by the hospital staff. We do not require that family stay with their loved ones but we are here to serve the needs of both patient and families alike.
